Consider the story from 1 Samuel, chapter 17:
Imagine being an Israelite, standing across from the Philistine army; the only thing separating you is basically the valley, or better yet: the field of battle.
The Philistine army already looks menacing and mean, as they stand on high alert, seemingly ready to attack at any moment.
And then… HE moves to the front of the line… standing at 9’9” tall* (6 cubits), all the way from Gath… the Philistine giant, Goliath, steps forward.
All of Israel makes a collective gasp except for the seemingly insignificant young shepherd boy.
Where the army of Israel saw a violent end, David saw a victory.
Israel knew the reputation of the Philistines, but David knew the reputation of His God. He knew God was in his corner.
Isaiah 54:17 (NASB) says:
“No weapon that is formed against you will succeed; And you will condemn every tongue that accuses you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,And their vindication is from Me,” declares the Lord.”
That verse, if we’re paying attention, instructs us that we can count on armies coming against us. We can count on situations, circumstances, people, giants, you name it… we will have warfare waged against us, at some point or another. However, knowing that our God is behind us, all we need to muster is a small seed of faith.
God, in all His promises, reminds us over and over in His word that when (not if) …
when we face the mountain
when we face the wall
when we face the giant
when we face the enemy or the army of the enemy
We have a promise that as a servant of the Lord, our heritage is secure. Our vindication will be from the Lord, as will our victory.
We can stand in faith, trusting that we will see a victory – no matter the goliath that comes against us.
PRAYER:
Jesus, may you and you alone be the one I seek most. Draw me close to Your heart as I adore You for who You are. Remove any or every idol I give myself to until You become my sole desire.
Amen.
