“The Christian is not ruined by living in the world, but by the world living in him." - John Stott

SCRIPTURE:

Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

DEVOTIONAL:

The world doesn't ask for your permission before it begins to work on you and tries to form you. It doesn't announce its agenda or hand you a syllabus. It simply presents itself—through screens, through conversations, through the accumulated weight of a thousand small messages—and quietly begins to teach. Things like: This is what success looks like. This is what your body should look like. This is what security requires. This is what you deserve. This is what you should be afraid of. And if you haven't been paying careful attention, you've been enrolled in a school you weren’t created for or never signed up for without realizing it.

Paul's word in Romans 12 is not a gentle suggestion—it is an urgent imperative. "Do NOT conform" translates a Greek word that means to be pressed into a mold. The world is pressing. It presses through media, money, comparison, ambition, and fear. The question Paul is asking is not whether you're being formed ---- YOU ARE—constantly, relentlessly, and ruthlessly. The question is: formed by what? Shaped by whom? Whose curriculum are you actually studying?

The renewing of the mind is not a passive process. It requires intentional, daily exposure to something other than what the world is feeding you. That is precisely what this fast is. You are choosing twenty-one days of refusing the world's curriculum and deliberately submitting yourself to a different one. You are choosing a “starving of the flesh” to invite a fresh filling of the Spirit.

Every time you feel the pull of what you've set aside, that's the world's syllabus showing up at your door, gently knocking; at least you perceive it’s gentle when it’s actually pervasive and demanding. And every time you say NO to this world—you are choosing the Kingdom of God that you were created for, and that truly you long for. Keep choosing rightly.

DAILY VERSE:

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2

PRAYER:

Father, I confess I have been in the world's school without fully realizing it. I have absorbed messages about worth, identity, and security that didn't come from you—and I have treated them as though they were simply true. Today, expose the carnal curriculum that has been shaping me. Replace it with the truth and the glory of your Kingdom. Renew my mind. I want to think the way you think, see the way you see, and value what you value. Teach me what is actually true. Amen.

FAST:

NEWS + MEDIA FAST — All Day

No news today—no TV news, no news websites, no radio news, no political podcasts, no news notifications. The world's curriculum runs through headlines. For one day, opt out entirely. Replace your morning news habit with the devotional and Scripture. Notice how much mental space opens up.
