“We tend, by a secret law of the soul, to move toward our mental image of God.” - A.W. Tozer
SCRIPTURE:
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.
DEVOTIONAL:
Most of us believe in two gods simultaneously. The first is the God of our theology—the one we describe in conversation, the one we sing about on Sunday. He is good, sovereign, kind, faithful, and near. The second is the god of our daily behavior—the one our decisions actually reveal, and the gap between those two is worth examining honestly. Here’s a truth we need to examine: what we do when we're afraid, what we do with our money, what we do when nobody's watching—that is the truest picture of what we actually believe.
The Psalmist doesn't say "God might be our refuge." He doesn't hedge his bets. The Psalmist declares that God IS our refuge with unshakable confidence, even in the face of earthquakes and collapsed mountains—the most catastrophic imagery available. Therefore, WE WILL NOT FEAR. That word "therefore" is doing enormous work. Courage doesn't come from the absence of the crisis; it comes from the settled knowledge of WHO God is. And that kind of settled knowledge is not produced by necessarily agreeing with theology; it is produced by living in relationship with the God we study.
One of the gifts of fasting is that it strips away enough noise for you to hear what you're actually saying to yourself about God. When the comfortable habit is removed, what rises to the surface? … Trust or anxiety? … Surrender or control? The fast doesn't manufacture doubt—it reveals what was already there, and God is not threatened by what the fast uncovers. He is waiting with patience and love to replace every inaccurate image of Himself with the truth. He doesn't expose what's hidden so to condemn—He exposes it to correct, and then to heal.
DAILY VERSE:
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. - Psalm 46:1
PRAYER:
God, I confess there is a gap between what I say I believe about you and how I actually live. I say you are my refuge, but I run to other things for comfort first. I say you are sovereign, but I live as though everything depends on me. Today, close that gap. Replace every distorted image of who you are with the truth of who you actually are. I want to believe what I say I believe—and live like it, in the small decisions and the large ones. Amen.
FAST:
CAFFEINE FAST — All Day
Today, fast from caffeine—coffee, energy drinks, caffeinated tea, and sodas. This is a gentle but revealing physical fast. The thing you reach for first in the morning says something about what you depend on. As you feel the pull, let it become a moment to ask God: what do I actually run to first when I need to feel okay?
