“To be holy is not merely to be separate from evil. It is to be wholly and entirely given over to God.” Andrew Murray
SCRIPTURE:
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."
DEVOTIONAL:
The word "holy” has been poorly marketed. For many people, it conjures images of joyless living, rigid rule-following, and withdrawal from everything the world finds interesting. But the Hebrew word “qadosh”—(set apart, sacred, consecrated)—is NOT about isolation; it is about distinction. Something is holy when it carries a different quality than everything around it. Salt is not absent from the meal—it is in the meal, doing what nothing else can do. Light is not removed from the dark room—it enters the room and changes what it encounters. Jesus was the most set-apart person who ever lived, as well as the most present.
He was at parties. He was at funerals. He was in the marketplace and in the temple and in the homes of people whose reputations nobody defended. He went everywhere that people were—and He was unmistakably, undeniably different in every room He entered. Not because He refused to engage, but because He refused to be formed by what He engaged with. His presence in a room changed the room; the room did not change Him.
Holiness is not a fence you build to keep the world out; it is a quality of life you carry into the world. The call to be holy as God is holy is not a call to purity as an end in itself—it is a call to reflect the character of the God who made you, in every room you enter. When you walk into a room shaped by fear, you carry peace. When you walk into a room shaped by cynicism, you carry hope. When you walk into a room shaped by selfishness, you carry generosity. That is what holiness in the world looks like.
Not separation—transformation.
DAILY VERSE:
Just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do. - 1 Peter 1:15
PRAYER:
God, I confess I have sometimes confused holiness with hiding. I have withdrawn from the world when you called me to enter it differently. God, I also confess that sometimes I have entered the world and blended in completely, forgetting that I was supposed to carry something distinct Today, teach me what it means to be set apart without being withdrawn—to be fully present in my world and fully formed by yours. Make me a carrier of something the world can’t explain. Amen.

ENTERTAINMENT FAST — All Day
No streaming, no movies, no TV shows today. Saturday is the day most of us fill with passive entertainment. Today, use that time differently—spend it with God, with family, in your neighborhood, in service, or simply in stillness. Holiness is not absence from the world; it is presence in the world with a different quality of attention.
