"To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." - C.S. Lewis
SCRIPTURE:
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
DEVOTIONAL:
Sunday was the declaration. Monday is the daily life. Forgiveness is almost never a single decision made once in a worship service and then done forever. It is a choice made on the most ordinary of Tuesdays, when the wound resurfaces not in a sermon but in a text message, a photo that appears on your feed, a dinner conversation that takes a wrong turn. The sermon gave you the framework. Now the week gives you the material.
“Just as in Christ God forgave you.” That standard appears in Ephesians 4 as though it is obvious — but it is the most extraordinary thing Paul could have written. The measure of your forgiveness is not how wronged you were, not how justified your anger is, not how ready you feel. The measure is: as Christ forgave you. And Christ forgave you before you asked, while you were still in the patterns that put Him on the cross. That is not a reasonable human standard. It is a supernatural one.
Which is exactly why Paul does not frame this as a matter of willpower. He calls you to be “kind and compassionate” — a posture, a disposition, something you wear. Not a one-time achievement but a way of carrying yourself through an ordinary Monday in August. You do not have to feel it fully to choose it.
Begin with the choice and ask God to do the feeling in you over time. That is not weakness. That isexactly the obedience Jesus asked for — and He will meet you in it.
DAILY VERSE:
Forgive each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. - Ephesians 4:32
PRAYER:
Lord, Sunday landed in a specific place in me. There is a name. There is a wound. There is a version of the story I have been rehearsing that has kept me from what you are asking. I come to you this morning with the real thing — not a general prayer about forgiveness, but the specific one. I choose forgiveness before the feeling arrives. I trust you to do the work in me that I cannot do in myself. Today I walk in what I declared on Sunday. Amen.
