"Our heart is restless, until it repose in Thee." - Saint Augustine, Confessions
SCRIPTURE:
Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?
DEVOTIONAL:
The world makes compelling promises. If you achieve this, you will feel significant. If you accumulate that, you will feel secure. If you look like this, you will be desired. If you arrive at that milestone, you will feel complete. These are not small promises — they tap into genuine, God-given longings for worth, security, belonging, and meaning. The world’s error is not in recognizing the longing. It is in what it offers to fill it. And the cruel thing about what the world offers is that it almost works. Just enough to keep you coming back without ever quite arriving.
Isaiah’;s invitation is almost funny in its economics: come buy without money, come eat without paying. The logic of the Kingdom inverts the logic of the market. You are not qualified by your effort. You don’t earn your place by your achievement. You simply come — thirsty, hungry, empty — and the God of the universe covers the cost. But the prerequisite is recognizing that what you’ve been spending your labor on is not actually satisfying you. That recognition is the beginning of freedom.
The comfort food fast today is a small experiment in that recognition. Every craving is asking a real question: what am I looking to feel right now, and have I been using food to answer a question it was never meant to answer? Bring that question to God instead. Let the craving become a prayer. Let the hunger point you toward the One who promised — not almost filled, not temporarily satisfied, but genuinely and finally satisfied. He has not broken that promise yet.
DAILY VERSE:
Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does
not satisfy? - Isaiah 55:2
PRAYER:
Lord, I confess that I have spent energy on things that don’t satisfy — and I have been confused about why I’m still hungry. Today I bring you the real hunger underneath the surface ones. The hunger to know that I am enough. The hunger to feel secure. The hunger to matter to someone who will not go away. I believe you are the only one who can actually answer those. Feed me with what lasts. Amen.
FAST:
SUGAR & COMFORT FOOD FAST — All Day
Today, fast from all added sugar: no desserts, candy, sweetened beverages, or comfort snacking between meals. Pay attention to when the craving hits — boredom, stress, frustration, loneliness. Sugar is one of the most common substitutes we reach for when we want to feel better. Let each craving today become a question: what am I actually looking to comfort or reward? Bring that answer to God.
