We are formed by what we attend to. What you give your sustained attention to shapes your theology, your emotional life, your assumptions about what is true and what is possible. This is not a new insight — it is ancient wisdom. The philosophers called it attention. The monastics called it watchfulness. Neuroscientists call it neuroplasticity. And Paul, writing from prison to a church in a volatile political moment in Philippi, called it: think about these things.
The list in Philippians 4 is intentional and corrective. True. Noble. Right. Pure. Lovely. Admirable. Excellent. Praiseworthy. Read those words again and then ask honestly: how much of what you consume daily would qualify? Not because the world has no ugliness worth confronting — but because there is a vast difference between engaging the world with clear eyes and allowing the world to set the agenda for your interior life. The news doesn’t just inform you. It forms you. The question is whether you are choosing what forms you — or letting the algorithm choose.
This weekend you will hear a message about a world full of frightening headlines. And the preparation for that message begins here, today, in this: the daily decision about what to watch. Not blind optimism. Not willful ignorance. But intentional attention — choosing to fix your gaze on what is true and noble and good, even while the world screams that everything is unraveling. I give you my attention — not as performance of discipline, but because I genuinely want to be shaped by what is true and noble and praiseworthy. Set the agenda of my mind today. Amen.
