SCRIPTURE:
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
DEVOTIONAL:
The Psalmist was not writing from a place of privilege and ease. He was writing into a world that felt genuinely precarious — unstable structures, real military threats, famine and pestilence that were not metaphors. And in the middle of that world, he made the most countercultural claim imaginable: therefore we will not fear. Not because the mountains haven’t fallen. Not because the waters aren’t roaring. They are. And: therefore we will not fear.
The word ”therefore” is the hinge. We will not fear — because of what is true about God. Because He is our refuge. Because He is our strength. Because He is an ever-present help in trouble. Not occasionally- present. Not helpful after a delay. Ever-present. The theology of Psalm 46 is not escapism — it is the most radical form of realism available to a human being. It is the willingness to see the world exactly as it is — roaring waters and all — and to stake your soul on a foundation the waters cannot reach.
Today’s message will not tell you the world is fine. It will tell you something better: that you serve a God for whom none of this is news, who holds what you cannot hold, and who speaks peace not as the absence of storm but as a presence that stands in the middle of one. You do not need the sky to stop falling. You need a God who is bigger than the sky. And you have one. Come to worship today with the full weight of the week — and let the God who is our refuge carry what you were never built to carry alone.

PRAYER:
Lord, I come to worship today with the weight of a world that often feels like it is coming apart. I bring with me the fears I’ve been carrying — about the state of the world, the future of my family, the direction of the nation, the things I cannot control. I lay all of it at your feet. You are the God who speaks peace in the middle of storms. Speak that word to me today. Remind me who holds the sky. Be my refuge and my strength — today and in every season that is coming. Amen.
