“You are not an accident of history. You were placed in this moment, in this city, in this generation — on purpose. God wastes nothing.” — Christine Caine
SCRIPTURE:
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
DEVOTIONAL:
This verse lands differently on Day 19 of a fast than it does on a random Sunday morning. Because by now, you have done something that most people never do: you have chosen to be set apart. Not perfectly. Not without struggle. But intentionally. You have fasted things that were not sinful just so that you could be more fully available to God. You have read, and prayed, and pressed in. And in doing that, you have been living out exactly what Peter is describing: a people who are marked by otherness because of who they belong to.
The phrase “holy nation” is striking in its communal scope. Peter is not just writing to individuals who happen to be spiritual. He is addressing a people — a community defined by their shared identity in Christ. Declaration Church is not a building or a weekend gathering. It is a people. A sent people. A prophetic people. A people who are called out of darkness not as an escape from the world, but so that they can declare light into it. The whole point of being called out is being sent back in.
Today, on September 11, there is something fitting about this: a day the world remembers as a day of darkness, violence, and fear. And yet, 25 years later, we sit here as a people who know that darkness does not get the final word. Because we belong to the One who called us out of it. We are a royal priesthood. We carry an intercession and a declaration that the world desperately needs. Do not minimize what you carry. You were set apart for exactly this moment in history.
DAILY VERSE:
You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession. - 1 Peter 2:9
PRAYER:
Lord, remind me today that I am not here by accident. You placed me in this city, in this season, in this generation with intention. What I carry matters. Who I am in you matters. Help me to live with that weight — not as a burden, but as a calling. I am yours. Use me today. Amen.
FAST:
FRIDAY FOOD FAST — Until 3pm
Fast from food until 3pm today. Use your hunger as a fuel for intercession — especially for those in your city and nation who are living in darkness. On this September 11, let your fast carry the weight of prayer for a generation that needs to encounter the light. You carry something the world needs. Ask God to use you today to deliver it.
