COMMUNION

Have you ever wondered why Christians eat a small piece of bread and drink a sip of juice in some church services?

You’re not alone.

For thousands of years, the Church has taken part in communion, or as some call it, the Lord’s Supper or Eucharist.

WHAT IS COMMUNION?

Approach communion understanding that we have no ability to save ourselves or to be close to God. It’s while we are still sinners that His kindness and grace invites us into relationship with Him. It is a privilege to meet with our creator, our Savior, and our King.

The early Church celebrated Jesus by joyfully and humbly taking communion (Acts 2:42–46). They saw that every time they gathered around a table to eat and drink, it was a chance to remember Jesus and thank God for all He’s done.

WHY BREAD AND JUICE

Jesus started the tradition. He told His followers to use bread and wine to remember the sacrifice He was going to make when He died for our sins on the cross.

(1 Corinthians 11:23–26)

Jesus called Himself “the bread of life,” which means that we’re nourished by Him, we survive because of Him, and He satisfies us when everything else leaves us empty.(John 6:48–51)

The wine symbolizes the blood of Jesus that was poured out on the cross during the time of His crucifixion. Through the blood of Jesus, we have been redeemed and forgiven of all our sins.

(Ephesians 1:7)
